Why it is a miracle to have fans...
I read a blog by Seth Godin this morning about how ideas are adopted. It made me that much more aware of how cool the folks who seek out new original music are.
By the time original music gets to be well known, It has already had to pass through several layers of culture. The people who are into the new thing or the hot thing come several layers after the people who first seek out original music; those people are the fringe. There is a group around them, who want to know what the fringe like. They are edgy and risky, but they are not willing to be the fringe. Around them are culture watchers who may or may not decide that something circling in the edgy risky group is a new thing. There are folks watching the new things and they make some of those into hot things. Once something is a hot thing, it could go mass. But obviously, that is a rarity, since only a few artists and songs bubble up from any given layer of audience.
That is a buttload of layers for a new song to go through before it becomes a part of the soundtrack of a lot of people’s lives. The great thing is, the only people we ever really have to care about and play our hearts out for are the fringe folks.
Here’s to the bluegrass/newgrass/Americana fringe! Extra love to the dancing and tree hugging ones! You cats are are the brave crazies, and we love you.
